Children's Cupboards
Encouraging children to dress themselves has hundreds of benefits. When they dress themselves it develops their independence as well as creatively expressing themselves in the clothes they choose to wear. Putting their foot into the opening of pants/ skirts develops hand-eye coordination. The very act of pulling on clothes develops all sorts of muscles in the arms, legs, stomach and the entire body. For a young child to focus on which way their trousers go and which part goes first develops their concentration.
For a lot of parents their first reaction to the children’s cupboard is “oh, the mess of them unpacking all their clothes!” This could be seen as an opportunity to teach them to fold their clothes (fine motor development) and to pack them away. Toddlers are more than happy to get involved and absolutely love to feel like they’re a part of something. Yes, even cleaning up!
Toddlers Beds
There is an alternative for your child instead of sleeping behind bars in a cot and that is our toddler bed. It’s very low to the ground so that babies who have learnt to turn around and can go backwards down stairs can easily get of the bed (assisting with gross motor and muscle development and spatial awareness). The option of an additional little gate at their bedroom door, allows them to wake up, explore and play in their room safely until they call for mom or dad.
For the more independent child without the gate, parents might prefer being gently poked in the eye to wake up than hearing ear-piercing shrieks first thing in the morning. The toddler bed has raised sides to stop children rolling out of bed. Being able to get in and out of bed fosters their independence and they wake up happier . A toddler bed would suit a 6 month old to a 3.5 year old. Before then they quite comfortably and securely sleep in a carry cot or in mom and dad’s bed.
With the toddler bed there is the add-on option of removeable side rails. So if you are concerned about them tossing themselves out of bed while dreaming, the removeable side rails will avoid this. The toddler bed can also be built to suit a standard single bed (with the features of the toddler style eg. low height, side rails) this way they will not grow out of it for many years.
Bundle o' Shelves
Dr Montessori observed that young children have a very definite need for order in their environment and in their daily activities; this helps them expect what comes next. When their environment is ordered it assists them in providing them with clear impressions. Clear impressions help children make sense of the world and to create their understanding of all the things around them.
To make this task easier for children is truly serving the child. We encourage parents to move away from the ‘toy box’ method of storing children’s toys. Throwing everything into a big box is much the same action as throwing away rubbish in a bin. It does not foster respect for their belongings. When we make use of shelves to display their toys it also means there are fewer toys out. We like to rotate our children’s toys every couple of weeks, this keeps them interested and saves on buying new toys all the time.
Children learn to appreciate and respect what they have and it it encourages them to care for their environment by having a place for everything – so everything has its place. The shelves are no-fuss as they are free standing and easily movable.
Dressing Table
The dressing table is a timeless item. Little girls and teenage girls, as well as their moms and even dads will get tons of use from the full length mirror. The drawer is the perfect storage space for whatever tickles the owner's fancy. This is a solid and sturdy item.
Hanger Box
The flower-hanger box, is wonderful for their dress up clothes or their favourite everyday items. The hanger rail is low enough so that children can reach it to hang up and take down their clothes. And practice putting clothes on a hanger - great Montessori activity. The box below can be used for shoes, hats etc. The little leaves / stem can be used for hand bags, costume jewellery, necklaces etc.
